Does your iPhone or Android phone not last the whole day on a single charge? Are you regularly checking your phone’s battery indicator to see how much power is left? If so, these five tips can help your battery last as long as possible.

  1. Lower your screen’s brightness setting. This can increase your battery life by up to 60% if you significantly lower the brightness of your phone’s screen. Most phones have an option to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness based on the light around you. You could also lower the screen’s brightness as low as you can and leave it at that level.
  2. Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you’re not using them. Both of these features can continuously drain your battery when left on. Turning off Bluetooth can add an hour or longer to your battery life. When you’re on the go, you can usually switch Wi-Fi off, unless you’re using a location service that needs Wi-Fi to get a better GPS fix.
  3. Don’t let apps always run in the background. If you leave multiple apps running at the same time, it can use a lot of battery power since the phone’s processor is working harder. Instead, completely close apps that you aren’t using.
  4. Keep your screen on for as short as possible. Adjust your phone’s screen timeout to the shortest time available (from 15 to 30 seconds), so it uses less power to display the screen after you tap it or get a notification. In an iPhone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. For an Android phone, go to your display settings and look for an option called something like Sleep or Screen Timeout.
  5. Don’t leave your phone charging overnight. Instead, once it charges to a 100% charge, unplug it. If you leave it plugged in, it can overheat and stress the battery and reduce its lifespan.

If none of these suggestions seem to work, your next step is probably replacing your phone’s battery. If you have an iPhone, you can go to a local Apple Store and have it done after paying a service fee. Android phone owners can visit an independent repair shop or smartphone store for a battery replacement.
