Does Our Healthcare Practice Need RMM?

As an IT Services company, our clients often ask: “Do I really need 24x7x365 Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM)?” While we believe emphatically, “Yes!” that you need RMM, let us try to help you understand why it’s needed.

What Is Remote Monitoring & Management?

Remote Monitoring & Management, or RMM as it is also commonly known, is a collection of Information Technology (IT) tools that are added to a network consisting of servers, infrastructure devices, and workstations. These tools gather information regarding the hardware, operating system and applications that are on the monitored network.

RMM provides a status on the devices it’s loaded on. That information can be performance, reliability or stability, version, inventory, on/off, or even security depending on a number of criteria. RMM tools also provide that same information to the person or company that is responsible for the IT Management of the network, which can be internal staff or outside third party.

Do You Need RMM?

Well … that depends on your circumstances. To find out, answer these 5 questions:

  1. Do you rely on information technology to operate your practice?
  2. If your EMR system failed would you be able to see patients?
  3. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is “Extremely Significant,” and 1 is “No Impact,” how impactful would a system failure be?
  4. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is “Extremely Significant,” and 1 is “No Impact,” how impactful would it be for your practice if your internet went down?
  5. On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is “Extremely Significant,” and 1 is “No Impact,” how impactful would it be for your practice if your email system went down?

If you answered “Yes” to question #1, answered “No” to question # 2, and if you rated questions #3, #4 and #5 as six, seven or above, then chances are that RMM would be beneficial for your practice. The point of these questions is for you to determine how impactful technology is to the proper operation of your practice.

How Does Remote Monitoring & Management Help?

RMM, when implemented and executed correctly, allows your IT staff or a third party IT Services Company to effectively provide proactive management on the technologies that comprise your network. Effective Remote Monitoring & Management also allows for your IT staff or third-party IT Services Company to proactively make changes to mitigate or remove problems before they occur.

RMM Prevents Downtime & Data Corruption

One example would be (and this is a very common issue) where data is stored on an unmonitored disk or storage sub-system, and that system fills up. Without a monitoring mechanism, this storage system would fill up to the point where it crashed, and your data would be corrupted. However, with RMM, a threshold can be set so that once it’s crossed an alert is sent and corrective actions are employed. As a result, your system would stay up and running, and data remain intact.

RMM Promotes Cybersecurity

There are other applications of RMM that can save your healthcare practice from grave security repercussions.

Remote Monitoring & Management will detect, block and eliminate unauthorized intrusions. It protects your IT environment from IT security exploits and repairs vulnerabilities in your system before you even know they exist.

And a Managed Antivirus and Patching System can be employed to protect your practice on a 24x7x365 basis from malware, viruses, and other security threats such as phishing attacks.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the ways RMM can assist in the management and safekeeping of your IT network. These are just a few simple examples were RMM can protect and manage your technology.
